Asheville, NC – A business professor at the University of North Carolina Asheville is facing a felony assault charge after being arrested for the third time in less than two months.
Susan Clark Muntean, 54, was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony assault on a Buncombe County Detention Officer. According to charging documents, Muntean allegedly punched a detention officer in the face while the officer was performing official duties. The officer allegedly suffered physical injuries, including swelling and bruising.
As previously reported by BDX News, Muntean was arrested in mid-April on charges of assault on a government official and simple assault, stemming from an incident at the Asheville Yoga Center. One week prior, she was charged with second-degree trespassing on UNCA property and resisting a public officer in an unrelated incident. The recent felony charge is unrelated and separate from the misdemeanor charge of assaulting a government official from mid-April.
Muntean has taught in the university’s business department for 11 years. She was previously out on a $2,000 unsecured bond for the early April arrest and a $1,000 unsecured bond for the mid-April arrest.
Based on the updated release order, Muntean is currently held at the Buncombe County Detention Center without bond. If convicted, she could face between 4 and 31 months in prison for this specific charge depending on how the court classifies it.
UNC Asheville has not issued a statement about any of the incidents.
